Father of the Bride

“Father of the Bride” was first published in the Wedding issue of Women’s Era, a leading women’s and lifestyle publication. Here’s the link:

I glance up at the starry sky,
In search of things I cannot find
The questions that I know not why,
I somehow cannot leave behind

I see the flowers everywhere,
I hear the things I want to know
Each wish, each blessing and each prayer,
For happiness love will bestow

But somewhere there are hidden tears,
And in my heart they quietly lie
Each moment of those long gone years,
Stayed with me as they passed me by

I see him as he smiles at me,
The smile that will not reach his eye
He’s not as brave as wants to be,
Somehow, we cannot say goodbye

For he’s the Father of the Bride,
And she will go away tonight
We cry the tears we cannot hide,
I ask him what I cannot fight

Dear Father, tell me, tell me please!
How can I leave, how can I go?
So far away, across the seas,
Where there is nothing I will know

Why can I not go home with you?
Why is this not like any day?
And now before this night is through,
It seems I will be on my way

Tomorrow when I will awake,
Will I not hear your gentle tone?
I think not for my heart will break,
With thoughts that are still so unknown

Oh, tell me Father, tell me now!
Please give me answers that I seek
So tell me why and tell me how,
Now who will listen when I speak?

Still you stand and smile at me,
The questions that I ask of you
Hard as they can sometimes be,
Are questions that you ask me too

I feel your hand rest on my head,
And suddenly there is no fear
For all the things you always said,
Deep in my heart now I can hear

And now before we bid goodbye,
I want to tell you Father dear
The stars are shining in the sky,
And always you will have me near
