You Shall Play Again

I recited “You Shall Play Again” on POETS RESPOND LIVE (A weekly affair by Rattle Magazine, a literary magazine based in California). Thank you to the editor for the opportunity! Here’s the video:

I see him by the pane,
Unblinking are his eyes
Like yesterday again,
He stares out at the open skies.

The bulbul comes and sings,
The sparrows flutter past
What happened to my wings?
He turns to me and asks.

Oh! How I wish to run,
Play tag and hide and seek
Under the twilight sun,
His eyes, they seem to speak.

The friends I have not seen,
The games I have not played
The trees but are still green,
It seems we went astray.

I yearn to feel the breeze,
Tugging at my hair
I long to climb the mango trees,
And pick a bunch to share.

I kiss atop his head,
The dimpled hand I take
Just think you went to bed,
And soon you shall awake.

The world will then be new,
Just like a rising dawn
Pristine as morning dew,
And hope will be reborn!

Then you shall run unbound,
With a mate or two
Around the grassy mound,
Along the river blue.

The laughter will return,
The sounds of jocund game
No longer will you yearn,
Yes, you shall play again!
